How Can I Use the Main Library?


 

This section provides information on how to use the books and periodicals in the Main Library of Shimane University Library.
Students, faculty members and staff of Izumo Campus are also able to use the books and periodicals in the Main Library.


 

Entering and Leaving

  • Having your student or staff ID card touch the entrance gate, and enter when the gate opens.
  • When leaving the building, please pass through the exit gate located in the center of the entrance.
  • If you forget your student or staff ID card, you can enter the library through the general user entrance next to the exit gate. At that time, please be sure to write the date and your student or staff number in the visitor book at the Service Desk. Also in this case, please go through the exit gate when you leave the library.

 

Borrowing a Book

  • Please use the Self-Checkout Machine next to the Service Desk or ask the staff to check out the books. For more information on how to use the Self-Checkout Machine, please click here.
  • You need your student/staff ID card or library card to borrow books. Please note that you will not be able to borrow books without your card.
  • Periodicals and reference books cannot be checked out from the library, so please read them in the library.


Borrowing from Another Campus
You can borrow a book held at another campus. The way to apply is the same as a reservation, searching a book on OPAC, clicking "Reserve" button, and log in MyOPAC, then choosing a receive counter and the way of arrival notification. The book can be returned at both of the Main Library and the Medical Library.

Special Lending
If you wish to use books for your graduation thesis or research, you may borrow books as a special lending in addition to the general lending.
Special lending service is available only for senior students those who will graduate in the current year, graduate students, and faculty members.
Faculty members may borrow up to 20 books in special lending, but books must be from the stacks.

Long Lending
Borrowing period will be longer during long holidays. Please check the notices on the library website for details.

Returning Books

  • During opening hours, please return books to the Service Desk. You do not need your student or  staff ID card to return books.
  • If you would like to return books on closed day or outside of library hours, please put them in the return box to the right of the entrance. In this case, the books will be scanned on the next open day.
  • If you have borrowed accompanying materials such as CDs or DVDs, please be sure to return them to the Service Desk along with the book, as putting the discs in the return box may damage them.
  • If you miss the due date, your new borrowing will be suspended for the number of overdue days.
  • If a Izumo Campus member borrowed a book from the Main Library, he/she can return it at the Medical Library.

 

Extension of Borrowing Period

  • When you would like to extend the loan period, you can renew only once, provided that no other user has reserved the book. For details on how to extend the borrowing period from MyOPAC, please refer to "How Can I Check a Status of Borrowing and Reservation?".
  • Once the due date is overdue, it cannot be extended.

 

Reservation (Only for Shimane University Members)

  • If the book you wish to borrow is currently on loan, or if you want to use a book from the Medical Library, you can reserve it through the OPAC. For details, please see "How Can I Reserve a Book?".
  • After making a reservation, you can cancel it from MyOPAC, for detail, please refer to "How Can I Check a Status of Borrowing and Reservation?".
  • If the book you wish to borrow is still on loan and you cannot borrow it after the due date has passed, please ask at the Service Desk.

 

Collections

  • In order to use the collections of rare books, you must submit an application for permission. Please apply at least 10 days prior to the desired date of use. For details, please contact the staff.
